Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and creator of the Montessori Method. Born in Chiaravalle, Italy, she moved to Rome in 1875. She became interested in teaching through her work with disabled children while studying medicine. In 1906 she oversaw what we would consider to be the first Montessori school in Rome. She wanted to apply her teaching methods she had developed through her work with disabled children to all children. Her first school was a big success and soon she opened more schools and started to gain the attention of educators from Italy and around the world. Today the Montessori Method is still widely used in the United States and abroad.
